The Making of...

2008: CUPCAKE began as an idea in Rebecca’s twisted mind over a year ago when she was thinking of putting together a film for the Trasharama Film Festival.

Late 2008: Rebecca decided to rework the script and apply for funding through Screen Tasmania to make her zombie film, but she needed a Producer.

Dec 2008: Rebecca and Rogan met through a mutual friend, Larainne.

Jan 2009: Work began on putting the submission together. Heath Brown began work composing the music. The film was then titled A Tasmanian Zombie Lesbian Love Musical (To be renamed at some point). Bec buys lots of feathery headgear, just in case.

25 Jan 2009: An initial read-through was held at Heath and Sara’s.  Everyone laughed.

2 Feb 2009: Film title was Map of Tassie: A Zombie Musical (working title). Submission for $65,000 put to Screen Tasmania for funding the film under their Short Drama Initiative guidelines. By lunchtime the film was titled Gayly Singing Up the Dead.

9 March 2009: Bec and Rogan met with Screen Tas judging panel.  Our hopes were high.

March 2009: Rufus, a short film which Bec wrote and directed, won the Wide Angle Tasmania Judges’ Award for Tropfest 2009.  Our submission for funding was rejected, as the judges felt the project was “too ambitious”. Bec slashes wrists; Rogan takes overdose.

2 April 2009: Bec and Rogan recover enough to put in a submission for Raw Nerve funding for another of Bec’s fantasy scripts. (Sorry - I think that should read “fantastic scripts”).  Funding for this one was also rejected (OK - maybe it wasn’t such a fantastic script.)  Bec and Rogan go into rehab.

May 2009: Damn it! We’ll make the zombie film ourselves anyway.  Troops rallied. Locations searched for.

31 May 2009: Read through at New Sydney Hotel of new improved script, now titled My Girlfriend Ate My Pussy - A Zombie Musical.
